Picture taken on a common beech-tree (Fagus sylvatica), 20/01/2007, Font de Passavets, Montseny, Barcelona, 1.200 m. altitude.
It is a very common lichen, saxicolous or corticolous, even on walls. It is frequent on beech trees. It has a large European distribution, from the seaside to the high mountains. It prefers the sub-mediterranean stage with temperate climate. However, in my area of study it has been found at Collada de Toses and the Cadi-Moixeró Mountains range.
Crustose lichen, thallus thin, white-greyish, grey or dark grey, cracked-areolate, without marginal lobes. Apothecia numerous, the disc red-rusty, sinuous margin, thalline margin thin, lighter coloured.
