Picture taken close to Santa Fe del Montseny, Barcelona, in a vertical watered rock surface, 1.000 m. altitude.
This lichen is not frequent in Catalonia and it is only mentioned at the Montseny mountain, subalpin and alpine stages. Umbilicaria hirsuta and Umbilicaria grisea have been united and described as a separate species:
Codogno,M.,Poelt J,Puntillo (1989) Umbilicaria freyi spec-nova under Formenkreis von Umbilicaria hirsuta in Europa. Plant sytematics and evolution, n. 1-2, pp 55-69.
The species is known to occur from the Western Alps through Central France to the Pyrenees, Northern Spain, Italy and Sardinia.
Lichen growing on bare siliceous rocks, leafy thallus, attached at a single central point, upper side pale grey, no rounded ascocarps, lobe margins eroded and sorediate ("parasoredia"), soredia in this case originates from structured plectenchyma of the upper thallus layer, often curved downwards. Down side from brown to black, rhizinae. Up to 4 cms in diameter.
Thallus K-, C+ red, KC-.
