Scarce lichen, it has been only found in Catalonia in several places of Montseny and across the Pyrenees. Common in cold regions of Europe. It is a subalpine, alpine lichen. It can be eaten by humans in case of survival need.
Saxicolus, foliose, thallus may be an undivided leaf up to 8 cms across, or it can be small, fissurated and divided into a series of small lobes (var. tornata), the upper surface pale grey to grey-brown when dry more green when wet, lower surface light pinkish-brown. In some individuals, cilia on the margins of lobes (cilia can be scarce, even disappear). Apothecia numerous, black, up to 1,5 mms, round, with gyrose discs, spirally contorted.
