Descripción: | Picture taken on the third of March 2007, close to the road in a rich nutrient rock at Mirador Can Penyacans, near Santa Fe Montseny, Barcelona, 1200 m. altitude. Caloplaca oxfordensis is a relatively frequent lichen in Spain in watered rocks with minerals and nutrients. In Catalonia it has been mentioned in Maresma and Montseny. It has an Holarctic distribution, temperate to arctic-alpine climates. Saxicolous, silicolous, crustose, sometimes parasite of other lichens, thallus ivory-grey, cracked-areolate. Apothecia numerous, lecanorine, red, with a good thalline margin, concolorous, Thick and persistent. It is a similar lichen to Caloplaca holocarpa, with more orange colours, to Caloplaca crenularia with less thick thalline margin even disappearing, to Caloplaca atrofuscoides, with white apothecia in certain cases. If we look over the picture carefully, there are apothecia that are very similar to those of Caloplaca atrofuscoides, not yet mentioned in Spain. I have to gather material for study because it could be a surprise. See Caloplaca atrofuscoides pictures in "Bohemian lichenology" (University of South Bohemia) http://botanika.bf.jcu.cz/lichenology/ (go to images). There is a very good set of Caloplaca images.
