Common lichen of Holarctic distribution, but normally in very sunny places. It grows in many habitats, silicious and basic soils, even walls.In Catalonia it is very frequent near the Mediterranean coast, Medas Isles, Cap de Creus, but it has been found in Montserrat and Montsant. It appears from the sea level to 1.100 m. altitude.
Foliose lichen, on soil or saxicolous, colour from olive-green when wet to brown or almost black when dry. It has small, swollen lobes, not flattened normally crowdeed of small apothecia, with orange-brown disc.
