Descripción: | Picture taken on the 11th March 2007 at Can Balasc, Les Planes, Barcelona on schists, 200 m. altitude. It is a common lichen found in all Europe from the coast to the mountains on silicious rocks and stones. In Catalonia, it has been found at the Maresme, Corredor and Montseny. Saxicolous, crustose lichen, grey thallus, very thin, areolated, with clear borders with a black hypothallus. Apothecia numerous, in clusters or in growth circles. It grows relatively quick colonizing rocks in shady places. Apothecia black, lecanorine, with a well developped thallin margin, from 0,2 to 2 mms in diameter, disc flat, convex at maturity. There are other close species, but Porpidia cinereotra and Porpidia crustulata are frequent on schists in the Meditrerranean area, at least, in Catalonia. Porpidia cinereoatra has a thicker thallus and more spread apothecia and it is more white in colour. In order to compare with other Porpidia see the wonderful page of Mike Sutcliffe where you can see several Porpidia. Congratulations to Mr. Sutcliffe for his well done job .
