Descripción: | Picture taken on the 9th April 2007 at "Gorges du Segre" near Bains de Llo, Llo, Oriental Pyrenees, France, on vertical schists, siiliceous rock, iron metal-rich area, 90 º, East oriented, in a place protected from direct rain, no water-tracks, 1380 m. alt. Very scarce in this place, growing almost alone. It it a lichen related to upland areas giving a yellow colour very evident from a long distance. I got acquainted to this lichen at Montseny and it loves almost vertical surfaces. In Catalonia it appears in Montseny and Pyrenees. I have found it in granite boulders at "Chaos de Targasonne". Crustose lichen, saxicolous, up to 8 cms (it seems larger in the Pyrenees than in Montseny, Dr. N. Hladun mentions a maximum size of 5 cm for the Montseny lichens) large, thick, bright yellow with a lemon tinge. Convex lobes distinguishes it from Pleopsidium chlorophanum with flat lobes and growing in the alpine stage. Lecanorine apothecia, variable, not only flat as mentioned by V. Wirth but normally flat when young and convex when adult. A very good illustration by V. Wirth in pag.413 of Història Natural dels Països Catalans . Vol 5 Fongs i Liquens. Thallus with negative chemical spot reactions, K-, C-, KC-. Nikon Coolpix 4.500 Autoeye, PH, NI and HTLM Editor |
