Picture taken on the 8th April 2007 at Enveitg, Alta Cerdanya, France, Catalonia, on a wall, siliceous rock, vertical surface, South oriented, in a very sunny place, 1.100 m. altitude.
Acarospora epithallina is a common parasite on Acarospora hilaris and according to Clauzade & Ozenda on Acarospora chorophana, but it is not mentioned in the BDBC. Dr. Xavier Llimonia describes it in a general way in Historia Natural dels Països Catalans, Fongs i Liquens.Very common in the rest of Spain.
Squamulous thallus, parasite on Acarospora hilaris, with not lobes, saxicolous habitus, crome-yellow, very tiny, squamules normally 2 mms wide, sometimes they arrive to 1 cm. Apothecia (0,2-0,4 mm), 1-4 per squamule. It appears as crome-orange dots on the lemon-yellow thallus of Acarospora hilaris.
With respect to Acarospora hilaris I did not expect to find it in the Pyrenees, but Cerdanya has certain Mediterranean influence in certain places allowing lichens like that. The flat lobes and the apothecia distinguishes it from Pleopsidum flavum and Pleopsidum chlorophanum that they live at higher altitude.
