Dactylina ramulosa new for the Iberian Peninsula

Dactylina ramulosa new for the Iberian Peninsula

Image Details

Descripción: Picture taken on the 24th May 2007, Km 14 Masella road, Masella, Girona, Oriental Pyrenees, Catalonia, Spain, close to an opened meadow, rich soil, pine forest border, calcareous substratum, damp place, flat surface, 1.500 m. altitude.

Very rare, it has only been found in the Arctic region, Alps and Apenin (Abruzzi)range of mountains. It is the first time I see it.

Fruticose lichen, up to 4 cm high, very branched, thallus with colours from green to brown and violet. I follow in my determination the keys of Clauzade and Roux, Likenoj de Okcidenta Europa in its French version by the "Association Française de Lichénologie".

"Thalle jaunatre panaché ou jaune brunâtre et violet clair, à l'estremité supérieure des tiges abondamment ramifiéess en buisson. Médule en partie creuse."

and Nimis & Martellos, Key for the identification of terricolous lichens occurring in Italy above the submediterranean belt on subneutral to basic substrata

"Medulla hollow, P+ orabge. Thallus yellowish green spotted brownish yellow and pale violet, shrubby, branches 1-2(3) mm wide, elongate, ascending, subterete. Photobiont chlorococcoid.- Note: on soil developing from calcareous schists."

It differs from Dactylina madreporiformis because the latter has a thallus completely yellow or green-yellow, and it is branched in a dichotomous way.

See picture pag 66 in Wirth et alter, Líquenes, Musgos y Hepáticas , Omega Editorial.

It could be good in the future to make molecular studies to better know both lichens. Molecular techniques are not easy for those lacking experience in this field. In any case, even as amateur naturalists, we have to know the techniques and protocols and use them.

My congratulations to Dra Ana Crespo and Dr. Oscar Cubero, I have just ended reading Chapter 23 of Protocols in Lichenology, Springer Lab Manual on Isolation of Nucleic Acids from lichens. Very good and precise. We need more papers like that, congratulations. It is the best way to advance in lichenology.
