Descripción: | Picture taken on the 30th April 2007, near Aiguatebia, Capcir, Oriental Pyrenees, France, siliceous rock, granite boulders, close the road, East oriented, 50 % inclination, 1.600 m. altitude. Common on acidic soil, but not very frequent in the Pyrenees. Fruticose lichen, not very tall, up to 5 cms, basal squamules incised, numerous and squamulous podetia, gray-green. It is very useful for determination the presence of white velvet texture zones in the podetia in opened cortex areas, very characteristic of the species. K- (if K+ probably C. squamosa var. subsquamosa, more robust and perhaps purely a chemotype). It is necessary to be very prudent with chemotypes and only accept those that meet with external different characters. The study of lichenic substances is useful but it is good to be cautious. It is better the molecular and genetic approach. Sometimes, it is good to read old papers with clear ideas. Lambinon Lichens chapter devoted to "Chimisme des Lichens"and Chapters 9 and 10 of Nash book devoted to "Biochemistry and secondary metabolites" and Chapter 10 "Individuals, populations and population ecology".
