Descripción: | Picture taken on the 26th May 2007 near Km 14 of Masella road, Baixa Cerdanya, Oriental Pyrenees, France, on mosses, on soil, shady place, West oriented, 45 % inclination, calcareous substratum but with a lot of humus layer. Among mosses, on soil, heliophilous, non nitrophilous. Very rare. The group of Cladonia coccifera is difficult because a sure determination can only be made using thin layer chromatography. However, the external morphology jointly with the habitat still works to determine species, but with certain risk of mistake.. Thallus umbilicate, wide, podetia stout, squamulose with coarse granules, not sorediate, red fructifications, relatively big. It differs from Cl. borealis in habitat(boulders and pick rocks) and altitude (normaly more thean 2.400 altitude), from Cl. diversa because podetia are more deformed and narrow and they are smaller, the latter is more frequent than Cl. coccifera. In any case Cladonia coccifera and Cladonia borealis are very similar. Cladonia coccifera contains: usnic acid, zeorin and porphyrilic acid. Cladonia borealis contains: barbatic acid, usnic acid and rhodocladonic acid. Armand Tomás Vidal Nikon Coolpix 4.500 and an umbrella to protect the photographer from the rain.
